Howdy 👋. I prefer not to sit on any sort of creative endeavor. My reluctance to label anything I release as work, or art is something I need to likely take some time to unpack. But, I probably won’t. What I believe to be the worst thing an artist can do is the aforementioned act of sitting on work.
I pride myself on output. Sure, I strive for quality. The operative word there being strive. I assume all of my friends, family, and anyone who knows me experiences a varying degree of schadenfreude when they see another twitter announcement, or substack, of instagram story about another one of my half baked creative urges.
But I have this perverse need to fail in public. Which brings us to a new collection of poems and short works available to download in .pdf format .
I recently had a conversation with a friend, also prone to getting work out there, about the nature of why we do the work at all. While a fun thought exercise — it is basically trying to uncover the meaning of life.
You wont become famous, no one will give you your flowers, some of you friends may even unsubscribe from your substack newsletter. But there is always that one chance that maybe one person will reach out and say “hey, I really liked that you did this thing. nice job!” If they do, thank them. Offer them gratitude. Give them a hug. Buy them a drink. Tell them you love them and thank them for being a patron of the arts.
In the event that this unlikely scenario occurs you will always have yourself, your thoughts, and a blank page with the cursor blinking back at you to let you know you’re alive.
Please excuse typos, formatting errors, etc. Worrying about that is for nerds. Peace and love, and thanks for sticking with me. Giddy up.
"Some pale flicker of light like an old Bic in the rain after a shake"
This line.
I'll take that hug.
Hey, I really like that you did this thing! :)
Reading the definition of schadenfreude made me LOL. I definitely don't feel that! The bravery of releasing your creations out into the world is admirable!
