Earlier this week at Yes Books in Portland, Maine the proprietor walked in front of me to say ‘we will be closing soon’. I was taken aback by this abrupt interjection into my calm browsing experience. I was holding a stack of books. Based on the store hours posted on the door, I had another 45 minutes to shop.
Alright. First time for everything I guess. So, I plopped my selections on the table, settled up, and went on my way. No hard feelings. Sir, you are doing g*d’s work!
I get excited about people opening and running bookstores. I do not know how (financially) something so pure could actually be possible. The less I know the better.
If I were less risk averse and didn’t have a crippling need to make as much money as humanly possible - I would probably join them. In the meantime, here are some of my favorite book shops that I suggest you patronize, online or in person.
Don’t buy your books from Amazon. Always look to ThriftBooks first. If you are looking for something new, try Bookshop.org. Even if you are not a reader, most bookstores have great merch. Try and shop small people!
Cemetery Gates Shirt from Book/Shop
Proust Print from Book/Shop
Agony Books Horses Hoodie
Team Camus Baseball Jersey from Des Pair
City Lights Baseball Cap from City Lights Books
“Reading Room” Plaque from Bookshop
Merch rocks! Keep in mind that you don’t need to buy anything. Thank you for opening this email. I appreciate you. Let me know what is going in your neck of the woods. Peace and love!
