Everyone is sharing their Spotify 2020 Wrapped. I won’t bore you with all the details. I’ll cut right to the quick. My most played song this year was Breakaway by Art Garfunkel.
As a life long soft rock fan I’ve spent a ton of time with the Simon & Garfunkel catalog, as well as Paul Simon’s solo oeuvre. But never any Garfunkel solo. I wondered why. So, I gave it some thought. Here is what I came up with.
After about an hour or so of kicking around his catalog I proved my original thesis. It’s all a bit too sleepy. Even for me. He is also a notorious wacko. Take a listen to him in between studio takes. It’s hard to fathom that this is real, and that Art Garfunkel is a human being.
Wild. Also, look at this motherfucker and his son! I’ve left the comment button below for you to sound off:
Compound all of this madness with the fact that, even though he is from New York, he is a diehard Phillies fan - and it’s all just a bit too much for me to take.
Now, the real reason why Breakaway by the madman was tops of my rotation is simple. Earlier in the year I fell in love with a cover of Breakaway by a little known Scottish duo called Gallagher and Lyle. I watched this video on repeat:
For me, this is a perfect song. I can assure you that if I were alive and making music in the 70’s this would be my genre. It’s quaalude rock. It’s sitting in front of a fire place with your loved one - two bottles of wine deep. It’s laying in a bed with multiple down comforters burying your body. But, it’s not on Spotify. I was so enamored with this song, so intoxicated by its aura, that I streamed a sub-par version of it over 100 times in a year. I’m ashamed! Either way, both versions are worth spending some time with as we start to feel the creep of winter.
I am genuinely curious if any one knows any good Art Garfunkel songs (save for Breakaway). If you have a favorite please send it along. I am always of an open mind.

**One last thing. If you came for a book reccomendation - I didn’t forget about you! Last week I zipped through Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. If you are into cold/pulpy/violent detective novels. This may actually be the best one ever written.
I hope you enjoy your weekend. As always, feel free to send me an email. I love you all!
Peace and love,
Dan
