“I bow in reverence.”
Over the years I’ve been compelled to try my hand at covering songs I love. They often (always) come out horribly wrong. But like all of the music I have ever released, they serve as a marker. I know like eight chords on the guitar - why do I think that I can remake someone else’s (a real musicians) song in the key of me? I can’t come up with any logical explanation other than that my cover attempts are some sort of tribute. Something I can commit to the cloud and send into the internet abyss - a cosmic joke or sorts.
Ever since I was a young person I have been compiling a list of songs that I wish I had written. Santa Monica by Everclear is one of them. Santa Monica only finds me once or twice a year, but every time it does I find myself turning it up all the way and singing it with every ounce of passion I can muster. Strange, I know.
I have not picked up an instrument, or even attempted to record anything for maybe a year - but this week I felt the need to sing these lyrics really loud in a room all by my lonesome.
We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die
The song is also easy enough (5 chords) to learn quickly. Here is my Santa Monica edit. If you ever liked the original, I hope this makes you smile.
If you would like to download a copy of this cover, you can do so on Bandcamp.
Back to talking about books next week. I hope you all are well!
Peace and love.
I love this song so much. Great cover.
