The backlash that this 20 books to read in your 20s tweet by @ArtOfLife_ received earlier this week spoke to me. I am an adult, so I no longer participate in twitter negging - it’s a zero sum game - but, I enjoyed following this one down the reply chain.
I am on record as being in opposition to the glorification of business book culture. Every now and then I think about voicing this disdain to my Linkedin network
but i
don’t write my
posts like
this
so i will never
be a
linkedin influencer, my voice will
not be heard
So, to see other share in the mocking of hustle-culture books gives me an awkward sense of pride.
If I were to just offer up any sort of advice for reading in your 20s it would be that it doesn’t matter what you read. Just read. Make the time. Seriously. But, if you are looking for a list to help there are plenty out there. This one from Penguin has some homers.
I thought about pulling my own list of twenty together — I started — then stopped.
The Big Chill is a great movie to revisit. Duster put out a new album called Together. Panda Bear shared a beautiful 17-minute ambient track that was commissioned, then turned down, by the meditation app Calm. The world kept turning.
Peace and love to you all.
I think about this post often and how much I deeply agree with it. The one thing I wish I could have done differently in my 20's is to not take on so much bullshit as gospel. I remember being so mean to myself because I couldn't get through some of these books. I thought my professional future depended upon how many I could read and how many conversations I could spark up using quotes from the authors. *barf* I'm glad people, especially you, are talking about how unnecessary these are to "shape your future" and the real key is just reading in general.
❤️thanks SO much for sharing that. It’s totally about just reading - whatever brings YOU joy.
